PORTERS LAKE AND
AREA COMMUNITY POLICING OFFICE
In the latter part of 2002, the possibility
of opening a community policing office was discussed
at the monthly meetings of the Porters Lake
Community Services Association. As the ideas
grew, a committee was formed to contact the
RCMP with this idea. In the Spring of 2003,
with the cooperation of the RCMP command staff
and the local Musquodoboit Harbour officers,
an office in the Community Centre was renovated
and on December 5, 2003, the office was opened
with great fanfare.
Volunteers from the local community are instrumental
in maintaining this office. Each volunteer had
to go through an extensive security check and
now donate their time to keep the office open
from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Saturday.
There is no funding from the RCMP and the office
is maintained strictly from donations and assistance
from the Porters Lake Community Services Association.
As in all volunteer organizations, we always
need more help. If you can assist us with a
few hours of your time, please give us a call.
The main aim of the office is to increase the
police presence in our community. The volunteers
can act as a liaison between persons with community
concerns and the RCMP. We have helped to organize
Town Hall meetings as well as enlisting volunteers
for other programs such as COPS, Neighborhood
Watch, and Citywatch. Why not just drop in to
say hello? We are located in the Porters Lake
Community Centre at the side entrance. Our phone
number is 827-4294. If no one is there, voice
mail will take the call.
